What is a Denial-of-Service Attack?
A Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack is a network or service attack designed to incapacitate the target's communication network or service. A DDoS attack can disrupt critical business operations by preventing access to cloud services, such as accounting software or e-commerce platforms.
Increasing Frequency of Denial-of-Service Attacks
To date, the largest DDoS attacks have been in the range of several terabits per second, and the number of complex attacks is increasing annually. This makes it nearly impossible to fend off such attacks without support from an operator.
How to Protect Against Denial-of-Service Attacks
Traditionally, DDoS attacks have been mitigated using firewalls and load balancers. These devices, which are typically installed on the client's premises, traditionally included DDoS protection features. However, these methods are no longer sufficient when a business's communication connections are saturated by a volumetric DDoS attack. Client devices cannot defend against attacks when the available bandwidth is exceeded.
